RED RIVER GORGE CABINS

Evocative architectural rendering showcasing skiers and a small wooden cabin in the background

Casa Mirador is an idea that came to fruition after having developed a series of site studies related to acoustics in a National Park in the state of Kentucky. Frequented year-round for outdoor activities, Red River Gorge is also home to a few long term residents in a extreme rural setting.

The driver for this project is the natural scenery offered at the Daniel Boone National Forest. A relationship between the river and the mountains determined the aggregation for the various houses deployed on the chosen site. Using the defining landscape as a strategy for doing so, a delicate balance between solitude and community is suggested. Featuring a bi-fold door on its facade, Casa Mirador protrudes itself out of the slightly gentle hill creating a strong visual statement among the natural landscape.

Designed as a temporary home, Casa Mirador is space efficient. The daily activity that are part of ones ritual such as sleeping, eating, and resting are strongly influenced by the vast landscape through the use of framed views. Casa Mirador is a mediator between the adventurous spirit and the wild.
